Bringing Compost to the Hills of Huaycan

Last Tuesday, House Manager Sarah and Women’s Program Coordinator’s Beth and Leslie, hosted a Composting Workshop for the Biohuerto Gardening Project in Zone Z.  While Huaycan’s beautiful, but largely barren foothills may not appear to be an ideal location for a garden, the women learned that the addition of organic matter and microorganisms, can lead to a truly flourishing garden.  In record time, the women were able to construct their own compost bin from mesh wire and ties.  Additionally, Biohuerto 1after spending a few days collecting kitchen refuse and cuy guano, they started their first compost pile.  As the pile continues to grow and transform, the women are looking forward to having this free and completely natural soil enhancer.  With proper care, Huaycan’s arid landscape will soon be marked by a lush and green vegetable garden!
